More About Captain James Cook

Captain Cook was born in a humble cottage at Marton on the southern outskirts of Middlesbrough which incidentally, did not exist in Cook's time. his father was a farm labourer who worked on a number of farms including Airyholme farm near Great Ayton. It was whilst he lived here that his employer aided his education and he was a keen and able learner and was a good scholar.

As outlined in the previous page, Staithes was the location of the next very important phase of Cook's life.

Cook soon left Staithes for nearby Whitby, not many miles to the south. Here he was apprenticed to a ship-owner and thus the training that made him a great explorer and seaman was developed. he later joined the Navy and eventually became a Captain.

His three remarkable voyages of discovery and adventure which required great resolution and endeavour were undertaken on the ships of the same name....
Endeavour... and Resolution accompanied by Adventure and Discovery.
